NYLT StaffNational Youth Leadership Training Staff at Big Horn

National Youth Leadership Training (aka NYLT - lovingly known in Colorado as "Big Horn") is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide all 13 to 20 year old youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. Leadership, fun, challenge, adventure - NYLT offers all of those and much more.

Every NYLT at Big Horn course operates according to Scouting ideals – those of Scouts BSA and Venturing. Each participant and staff member is welcomed, appreciated, and valued. Each year we select the "best of the best" from the Denver Area Council to be NYLT Staff. Are you up for the challenge?

Leadership Positions

As discussed at the January 12 All Hands meeting, all staff - youth and adult - are now considered "volunteer camp staff" and as such need to complete two additional steps - the Doubleknot registration (linked below) and the Workbright onboarding process. For your reference, the presentation made at the All Hands meeting is available here for download.

Youth Staff Registration

All NYLT Youth staff members must complete and submit your registration before being considered part of the leadership team. Registration should be completed before April 1, 2019. After completion you will also need to complete WorkBright Onboarding processes. Both Registration and Onboarding are required to participate on NYLT staff.

You will receive access to Workbright via email, which should arrive two days after completion of this form. If you have not received the email in a timely manner, first check your spam/junk folder, then contact Jason Pettis at jason.pettis@scouting.org Please do not register until you have been confirmed by your session's Scoutmaster that you are to be part of the 2019 NYLT leadership team.

Adult Staff Registration

All NYLT Adult staff members (over 18) must complete and submit your registration before being considered part of the leadership team. Registration should be completed before April 1, 2019. After completion you will also need to complete WorkBright Onboarding processes. Both Registration and Onboarding are required to participate on NYLT staff.

You will receive access to Workbright via email, which should arrive two days after completion of this form. If you have not received the email in a timely manner, first check your spam/junk folder, then contact Jason Pettis at jason.pettis@scouting.org Please only register if you are confirmed and committed to be part of the Adult NYLT Leadership team - no "alt's", "maybe's", or "if needed's"

After Staffing NYLT, what comes next?

For scouts that have completed NYLT, there are two additional training experiences:

What happened to just "Big Horn"?

From the 2016 syllabus: "The local traditional names were phased out for 2009 courses; all courses should be known as NYLT. Joint names (i.e., Brownsea NYLT) are not to be used.". We want to emphasize that participants are taking part in a National training course, and that the course they experience here matches courses run by other Boy Scouts of America Councils anywhere in the United States. That being said, we want to respect and honor our heritage, thus we preserve the Big Horn icons, patches, council strips, and name while on course.
